LGBTQ+ Groups Disappointed with Marcos’ SONA<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

MANILA, Philippines \u2013 LGBTQ+ groups have expressed their disappointment with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s third State of the Nation Address (SONA). Despite high expectations, the president did not address equal rights as a priority in his administration’s agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lack of Mention <\/strong>Lack of LGBTQ+ Rights in Marcos’ Address<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

MANILA, Philippines \u2013 President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.\u2019s third State of the Nation Address (SONA) left LGBTQ+ groups disheartened as he failed to address equal rights as a significant concern of his administration. Despite the speech lasting over an hour, there was no mention of the LGBTQ+ community or any legislative measures aimed at prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advocacy for SOGIE Equality Bill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Several lawmakers showed their support for the LGBTQ+ community by wearing rainbow pins on the SONA red carpet, advocating for the long-pending SOGIE equality bill<\/a>. This bill, which seeks to eliminate discrimination against individuals based on their SOGIE, has been stalled in Congress for more than twenty years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Response from LGBTQ+ Advocates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are disappointed that once again, the equality agenda has been set aside in the State of the Nation Address despite it being a basic human right. We firmly believe and maintain that equality and non-discrimination ought to be staples in the national agenda,\u201d stated Vince Liban, PANTAY national convenor, in a public statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PANTAY, a key member of The Equality Alliance, which includes over 200 organizations, had previously urged President Marcos in an open letter to certify the SOGIE equality bill as urgent. Despite these efforts, the bill remains unaddressed in the legislative agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
