This estimate includes <strong>losses in international funding, a decline in foreign investments, and reduced tourism revenues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Repressive Bill Awaiting Debate<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Named the <strong>Family Protection Bill<\/strong>, the proposed law suggests <strong>prison sentences of up to 50 years<\/strong> for same-sex relationships. Introduced in <strong>2023<\/strong>, the bill has <strong>not yet been discussed in Parliament<\/strong> but could be debated this year. Homosexuality is already <strong>illegal in Kenya<\/strong> under a <strong>rarely enforced colonial-era law<\/strong>, yet the country is still seen as a <strong>relative safe haven<\/strong> for LGBT+ individuals fleeing persecution in neighboring states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Growing Stigma<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite this <strong>relative tolerance<\/strong>, <strong>discrimination and stigma remain prevalent<\/strong>, with <strong>increasingly homophobic rhetoric<\/strong>, particularly <strong>encouraged by some religious leaders and populist politicians<\/strong>, according to Open for Business&#8217; report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the bill were to be passed, the <strong>NGO estimates that it could cost the country between $2.7 billion and $7.8 billion per year<\/strong> due to several factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Loss of World Bank funding<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reduction in foreign aid and investments<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Negative impact on tourism<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exodus of many LGBT+ individuals<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Read also:<\/strong> <em>Kenya, the Next African Country to Pass an Anti-LGBT Law?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lea tambi\u00e9n : <a href=\"https:\/\/queervibesmag.com\/es\/economic-impact-of-anti-lgbtq-laws-in-kenya\/\">Impacto econ\u00f3mico de las leyes anti-LGBTQ en Kenia<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Negative Consequences for the Economy and Investment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dominic Arnall, CEO of <strong>Open for Business<\/strong>, warns about the effects of such legislation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAnti-LGBTQ+ laws harm a country\u2019s investment prospects, global reputation, and prevent businesses from attracting top talent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Precedents in East Africa<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study highlights that <strong>the World Bank suspended loans to Uganda<\/strong> after the adoption of an <strong>extremely harsh anti-LGBT+ law in 2023<\/strong>, which includes <strong>the death penalty for \u201caggravated homosexuality\u201d<\/strong>.
