Mandate Extended for Another Three Years<\/h2>\n

On Monday, the United Nations Human Rights Council voted in favor of renewing the mandate of the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The extension grants the position another three years, ensuring that global advocacy for LGBTQ rights continues through 2027.<\/p>\n

Divided Opinions Among Member States<\/h2>\n

The resolution was passed with the support of 29 member states, including France, Germany, Brazil, Japan, Spain, and South Africa. In contrast, 15 nations\u2014among them China, Qatar, Indonesia, Morocco, and Sudan\u2014voted against the renewal. Three countries\u2014Benin, Ghana, and Kyrgyzstan\u2014chose to abstain.<\/p>\n

United States Withdraws Again<\/h2>\n

The United States, despite having reclaimed its seat at the Human Rights Council in 2021, is no longer participating in the body’s current proceedings. This is due to a recent decision by Washington to step back, announced in February. The move echoes the earlier withdrawal initiated in 2018 during the Trump-Pence administration.<\/p>\n

Graeme Reid Continues in His Role<\/h2>\n

South African human rights advocate Graeme Reid will continue to serve in his role as the UN Independent Expert. Appointed in 2023, Reid previously led the LGBT Rights Program at Human Rights Watch. His extensive experience and ongoing commitment to equality will support the UN\u2019s efforts to combat discrimination against LGBTQ individuals worldwide.<\/p>\n
