A Unique Story That Became a Cultural Phenomenon<\/h2>\n

Now streaming on Netflix, the two installments of The Shiny Shrimps<\/strong> (“Les Crevettes paillet\u00e9es”) are back in the spotlight. Co-director C\u00e9dric Le Gallo<\/strong>, the creative force behind the films, and actor Geoffrey Cou\u00ebt<\/strong>, one of the main stars, reflect on the unexpected success of these queer comedies. While LGBTQ+ representation in French cinema<\/a> was long overlooked, early cult classics like Gazon Maudit<\/em> (1995) and P\u00e9dale Douce<\/em> (1996) paved the way. Yet it took over two decades for a film like this to truly ignite public interest \u2014 and challenge expectations.<\/p>\n

At first, The Shiny Shrimps<\/strong> wasn\u2019t destined for commercial glory. But for Le Gallo, the film was deeply personal \u2014 inspired by his own gay water polo team, the Shiny Shrimps, and their real-life experiences.<\/p>\n

A Daring Concept That Won Over Producers<\/h2>\n

In 2017, C\u00e9dric Le Gallo was still working as a journalist for TF1\u2019s 50 Minutes Inside<\/em>. Yearning to shift to filmmaking, he envisioned a vibrant comedy based on his team\u2019s journey. The idea quickly caught the attention of producers who saw potential in this colorful mix between a queer road movie \u2014 reminiscent of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert<\/em> \u2014 and a sports film set during the Gay Games in Croatia. Everything changed once Universal<\/strong> showed interest in distributing the film.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was an irrational love at first sight,<\/em>\u201d recalls Le Gallo. \u201cLooking back, it was financially improbable. It didn\u2019t fit into any traditional mold.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

A Bold Casting Choice and a Collective Adventure<\/h2>\n

The funding \u2014 a budget of three million euros \u2014 came together faster than expected. A diverse and energetic cast was assembled. Nicolas Gob<\/strong> took on the role of the straight-laced coach, Alban Lenoir<\/strong> portrayed the charismatic Jean, while Geoffrey Cou\u00ebt<\/strong> stepped into the colorful role of Xavier.<\/p>\n

\u201cXavier\u2019s boldness initially intimidated me,<\/em>\u201d Cou\u00ebt shares. \u201cBut I realized that flamboyant characters spark change. That insight was powerful for me on both a personal and artistic level.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

From Box Office Hit to Media Milestone<\/h2>\n

Filming involved water scenes, choreography, and intense sports competition \u2014 a demanding shoot by all means. But Le Gallo always believed in the film: \u201cI knew from the start it would connect. It was the kind of movie I wished I had growing up \u2014 one with joyful, unapologetic gay heroes proving that life can be amazing.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

The release proved him right: a massive premiere at Grand Rex in 2019<\/strong>, positive reviews, and more than 600,000 theatergoers<\/strong>. But it was the landmark front cover of L’\u00c9quipe<\/strong>, featuring a kiss between Le Gallo and a teammate under the headline \u201cKiss Whoever You Want\u201d<\/a><\/em>, that made a lasting impact.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat moment transcended the cinema world. The story became about breaking down homophobia in sports,<\/em>\u201d says Le Gallo. \u201cUniversal in Hollywood saw the cover and immediately asked if we were planning a sequel.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

A More Politically Charged Sequel<\/h2>\n

The Revenge of the Shiny Shrimps<\/strong> followed, filmed in Ukraine and set in Russia, where the film tackles discrimination in an oppressive environment. While keeping the humor and camaraderie of the original, the tone turned more politically engaged.<\/p>\n

Released in April 2022 \u2014 during a difficult period marked by lockdowns, the war in Ukraine, and summer heatwaves \u2014 the sequel still attracted around 150,000 viewers<\/strong>. \u201cIt was a tough timing. I thought it needed a winter release. But instead, it was 26\u00b0C and war was breaking out,<\/em>\u201d Le Gallo recalls.<\/p>\n

The Shrimps\u2019 Journey Is Far From Over<\/h2>\n

With both films now on Netflix, this new chapter offers a sense of fulfillment for Le Gallo. \u201cThey\u2019re like books on a shelf now \u2014 easy to access, open to everyone.<\/em>\u201d But he\u2019s not closing the door just yet.<\/p>\n

The director envisions a TV series spinoff<\/strong>: \u201cThe films focus on big, collective moments. A series would be the chance to explore their daily lives, work, and personal stories. There\u2019s a lot of potential there.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

A Team Ready to Dive Back In<\/h2>\n

Geoffrey Cou\u00ebt, now involved in documentary and artistic projects, remains connected to the team: \u201cI\u2019d love to reunite with the Shrimps! What stays with me beyond the intense filming is the real friendship and pride. I wonder where their journey took them.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Exploring Identity in New Directions<\/h2>\n

C\u00e9dric Le Gallo is also developing a new feature film in the realm of sports and queer identity. This time, he\u2019ll focus on a coming-out story set within a professional football team\u2019s locker room<\/strong> \u2014 a subject still taboo in many circles. \u201cIt\u2019ll still have humor, but it won\u2019t be anything like the Shrimps. I\u2019m hoping to start filming in early 2025.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n
