From all corners of the globe, dedicated individuals are tirelessly working, often in challenging situations, to ensure everyone can live freely and authentically. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and ILGA World proudly announce the second edition of the International Pride Awards. This international initiative celebrates leaders, activists, and allies who contribute significantly to advancing equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ+) individuals.<\/p>\n

The winners of the 2026 edition will be unveiled on August 5, 2026, during a special event part of the WorldPride Human Rights Conference, which will take place in Amsterdam, Netherlands.<\/p>\n

These efforts are part of a broader wave of international events celebrating the diversity and visibility of queer communities. Many noteworthy LGBT events have made significant historical impacts<\/a>, pushing forward the recognition of rights in numerous countries.<\/p>\n

Award Created to Celebrate Resilience and Inclusion<\/h3>\n

Initiated in 2024, the International Pride Awards aim to highlight stories of resilience, solidarity, and strides toward greater equality. Through these recognitions, organizers wish to remind the global community that inclusion is not just a goal: it is actively propelled by local initiatives and civic movements worldwide.<\/p>\n

These awards also serve as a platform to share inspiring stories and motivate others to continue efforts for human rights.<\/p>\n

Significant Legal and Social Challenges Remain<\/h3>\n

Despite these advancements, the situation remains concerning in many countries. Currently, 65 states still uphold laws criminalizing consensual same-sex relationships in private settings.<\/p>\n

Among them, seven countries enforce the death penalty for such acts, while in five others, a lack of comprehensive legal security leaves affected individuals in a state of uncertainty. Moreover, constitutional protections are scarce: only twelve countries explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, five include gender identity, one protects gender expression, and none mention sex characteristics. Dedicated Advocates Despite Risks<\/h3>\n

Amidst these challenges, many human rights defenders bravely continue their fight. Across different regions, activists devote their energy, and sometimes their personal safety, to promoting LGBTIQ+ equality, dignity, and recognition.<\/p>\n

The International Pride Awards aim to spotlight these initiatives and stories, amplifying their impact, inspiring further commitments, and strengthening the global momentum for change.<\/p>\n
