Last week, a young worker became the first person convicted under this stricter legislation.

This change comes amidst a concerning regional context, as detailed in analyses focusing on the deterioration of LGBT rights in Africa in recent years.

Six-Year Prison Sentence Handed Down in Dakar

A Dakar court last week sentenced a young Senegalese man due to his homosexuality, according to a judicial source. This marks the first ruling since the adoption of the law in March, which increases penalties for same-sex relations in the country.

According to a source that requested anonymity, the young worker, born in 2002, was arrested on April 2 in a Dakar suburb after being caught in a sexual act with another man.

Severe Sentence Coupled with a Heavy Fine

On Friday, the court in Pikine-Guédiawaye sentenced him to six years in prison for “public indecency” and “unnatural acts,” terms used to describe same-sex relations, during a fast-track trial.

He was also fined two million CFA francs, equivalent to approximately 3,048 euros. The other individual involved in the case is reportedly on the run, according to the same judicial source.

Promulgated by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the law now stipulates prison sentences of five to ten years for same-sex relations and increases fines to between 2 million and 10 million CFA francs.

An Environment Marked by Increasing Arrests

This legislative change occurs in a context of rising homophobia in Senegal, accompanied by numerous arrests on suspicion of homosexuality.

This issue has been a recurring theme in public debate for several years, intensifying particularly after the arrest of 12 men, including two local celebrities, for “unnatural acts” in early February.

In this context, it is crucial to understand the realities faced by sexual minorities in the region, as discussed in analyses focusing on the LGBTQ communities in the Sahel.

Politically Beneficial Measure for the Government

Since the law came into effect, 63 individuals have been arrested for similar offenses by the Keur Massar gendarmerie, which is handling the investigation.

In Senegal, same-sex relations are widely viewed as deviant, and the strengthened crackdown has long been a politically advantageous promise for the ruling party.

International Condemnation in the Name of Human Rights

Homosexuality is often depicted as a tool used by Western countries to impose foreign values on local cultures.

Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, condemned the law for violating fundamental human rights, calling for its urgent revision.

For ongoing updates and a deeper understanding of international issues, consider following the section dedicated to LGBT news and developments worldwide.

Latest News

LGBTQ NEWS AND GLOBAL UPDATES LIVE ON QUEER VIBES MAG

USA NEWS

WORLD NEWS

Welcome to our LGBTQ news category, your essential source for staying informed on the latest news, trends, and advancements in the LGBTQIA+ world.
