As the regional scene begins to organize itself, this event aligns with the momentum of queer cabarets in Normandy, helping to create inclusive artistic spaces outside major cities.
In Rouen, a new artistic venture focusing on drag and cabaret is set to debut. Spearheaded by Rouen-based artist Tresha Dollaj, La Velour Rouge aims to provide the city with a free-spirited, inclusive, and committed performance space. As the first show approaches, set for March 21, 2026, the creator reflects on the project’s origins, her journey in the drag scene, and her goals to invigorate the queer scene in Normandy.
A Rare Platform for Expression in Rouen
Billed as a “genuine space for expression” for drag and cabaret, La Velour Rouge stemmed from an observation. For three years, Tresha Dollaj has been active in the Rouen drag scene. She points out the challenge of finding venues open to hosting drag artists and performers while building a loyal community around this art form.
Despite several attempts to organize events, audience turnout proved challenging. She recalls a date in July where not a single ticket was booked, leading to the event’s outright cancellation.
The Birth of La Velour Rouge
In the fall of 2025, rather than giving up, the artist intensified her efforts. Driven by a passion for cabaret, she decided to create an event entirely focused on this universe. Thus, La Velour Rouge was born.
Tresha Dollaj sought a venue, set aside money, and collaborated with various artists to create a well-rounded program. The project is now ready to be unveiled to the public on March 21, 2026, at Les Mots Éphémères in Rouen. With weeks to go before the event, about 75% of the tickets are already sold, a result she sees as a true triumph for an independent queer initiative launched without any external financial support.
Tresha Dollaj: A Character Shaped by the Stage
Tresha Dollaj came into being approximately four years ago. However, her passion for artistic creation and performance dates back to her childhood. From costumes to family performances and character creation, her love for staged drama developed early.
The official debut of Tresha Dollaj occurred during the 40-year anniversary of the Beau Geste company, when Dominique Boivin invited her to perform. Since that first experience, she has graced numerous stages and theaters, exploring new forms and fostering collaborations. Her performances have taken her to places like Lille and more recently, Cherbourg, where the drag scene is flourishing. More projects are in the pipeline for the coming months.
A Fully Normand Program to Assert Identity
For its inaugural edition, the program is crafted as a manifesto for local talent. The aim: to assemble an entirely Normand lineup, highlighting the vitality of the local drag scene, even if some artists now reside elsewhere.
The audience will see Romzyy, a singer from Rouen whose lyrics have deeply resonated with Tresha Dollaj. Several drag artists will also share the stage: La Gorgone, Courcheval, Nowah Superstar, and France Garce making her debut in the scene.
Through La Velour Rouge, the organizer also seeks to give stage time to emerging artists. She emphasizes the potential of France Garce, describing her as a remarkable performer who is likely to surprise the Rouen audience.
Artistic Commitment Amid Political Context
The evening promises to be “inclusive, welcoming, and committed.” For Tresha Dollaj, advocating for drag and cabaret is an essential commitment. While this art doesn’t guarantee stable financial returns, it remains a fundamental pillar personally and mentally.
In a context marked by the rise of far-right ideologies and a concerning political climate, she believes in the necessity of preserving spaces of freedom. Cabaret becomes a sanctuary, a place to escape anxiety-inducing news and uphold values of openness. La Velour Rouge is envisioned as a space where everyone finds their place, without judgment, in an atmosphere of respect and love.
A Long-Term Ambition to Shape the Cabaret Scene in Rouen
Beyond the first event, there is a clear ambition: to make La Velour Rouge a sustainable fixture. Tresha Dollaj is already envisioning future editions, hoping to grow the project into a staple on Rouen’s cabaret calendar.
However, she reminds us that the event’s longevity will depend on public support. Organizing such an evening requires time, considerable investment, and constant energy. An energy she assures she has in abundance, fueled by her passion for drag and cabaret.
