Homophobic Attacks in Nantes: A Growing Threat Despite Repeated Warnings
Predatory Traps Targeting LGBTQIA+ Individuals via Dating Apps
A surge in anti-LGBTQIA+ violence in Nantes has raised serious concerns among local organizations and authorities. Several individuals have recently fallen victim to targeted assaults after being lured through dating platforms such as Grindr, Tinder, and Snapchat. Attackers arrange meetings in secluded public parks—often between midnight and 3 a.m.—at locations known as LGBTQIA+ gathering spots. Once onsite, victims are assaulted and robbed, far from public view.
A Disturbing Pattern Recognized by Local LGBTQIA+ Groups
Émeric Migaise, the coordinator at Nosig, Nantes’ LGBTQIA+ center, notes this is far from an isolated issue. “Being LGBTQIA+ still makes us targets for violence in 2025,” he laments. He regularly receives testimonies of verbal and physical abuse and stresses that these violent ambushes are unfortunately not new. “We’ve been hearing about these setups for years,” he explains, hopeful that increased media coverage will prompt swift and effective action.
Alarming Increase in Incident Reports
Since the start of the year, the frequency of these assaults has been rising. Philippe Jos, interdepartmental director of the national police in Loire-Atlantique, states that reports of attacks are now almost weekly. “The pace is intensifying,” he says. Several violent incidents occurred over the summer, including a particularly brutal one in early August in Rezé, where a man was struck with a hammer. Another attack was reported on August 20 in the Crapaudine Park in southern Nantes.
Arrests Made, But the Violence Persists
Authorities have arrested two suspects so far. One of them, an 18-year-old, was caught in the act at Crapa Park on Beaulieu Island and is linked to around ten similar assaults. He has been detained. The second individual is expected to appear in court in 2026. Despite these arrests, the attacks have not ceased, and the LGBTQIA+ community continues to be affected.
Police Response Stepped Up Amid Targeted Threat
Law enforcement has responded with reinforced measures to combat this targeted violence. Additional patrols are being deployed in high-risk areas, and all complaints are now centralized under a dedicated investigative unit to improve response coordination. “These are clearly homophobic assaults, as the victims are targeted specifically because of their sexual orientation,” confirms Philippe Jos.
Safety Tips for Dating App Users
The national police urge the public to exercise caution when arranging meetups through online platforms. They advise users to opt for public and well-lit locations for first meetings, avoid late-night rendezvous, and be alert to any signs of suspicious behavior. In the event of an assault, individuals are strongly encouraged to call emergency services via 17 immediately and file a report at the nearest police station.
