Targeted Attacks Through Dating Applications
A new case of homophobic violence has come to light in the Moselle region, where six young men were placed in provisional detention at the end of October. According to Sarreguemines prosecutor Olivier Glady, the suspects allegedly lured gay men through the dating app Grindr with the intent to assault them. The incidents occurred in and around Sarreguemines.
The method was systematic: the suspects initiated conversations with their victims via the app, arranged to meet in person, and initially only two individuals—unmasked—would show up. Shortly thereafter, several masked accomplices would join them, suggesting deliberate coordination.
Violent Assaults and Homophobic Abuse
The assaults were particularly violent, involving both intimidation and robbery. “The offenders used knives and a taser to threaten victims, demanding cash or instant bank transfers,” the prosecutor stated. Beyond physical violence and threats, victims endured derogatory homophobic slurs, had their cars searched, and saw attempts made to delete data from their phones.
Investigators suspect financial gain was the primary motive. This type of scheme has been seen before on platforms catering to LGBTQ+ users, pointing to a disturbing pattern of exploitation and targeted attacks.
Repeat Offenders and Ongoing Investigation
The six suspects, aged between 20 and 22, all have prior convictions from juvenile court. On October 29, authorities arrested them and brought them before an investigating judge before placing them in custody. Local station Radio Mélodie reported that five of the individuals were caught in the act by gendarmes in Sarreguemines.
An official investigation has been launched on grounds of aggravated extortion, criminal conspiracy, and possession of stolen property. So far, five victims have come forward, including one who sustained injuries requiring 30 days of medical leave, according to ICI Lorraine. Authorities continue to search for other potential victims who may have been targeted in similar ways.
Rising Threats and Safety Measures
Homophobic ambushes have increasingly been reported across France in recent years, averaging at least one incident per week. In response, advocacy groups and law enforcement stress the importance of basic safety measures: arrange to meet new people in public spaces and avoid isolated locations, especially for initial encounters.
