Global Recognition for Change-Makers
Honoring Pioneers of Change Worldwide
From all corners of the globe, dedicated individuals are tirelessly working, often in challenging situations, to ensure everyone can live freely and authentically. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and ILGA World proudly announce the second edition of the International Pride Awards. This international initiative celebrates leaders, activists, and allies who contribute significantly to advancing equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ+) individuals.
The winners of the 2026 edition will be unveiled on August 5, 2026, during a special event part of the WorldPride Human Rights Conference, which will take place in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
These efforts are part of a broader wave of international events celebrating the diversity and visibility of queer communities. Many noteworthy LGBT events have made significant historical impacts, pushing forward the recognition of rights in numerous countries.
Award Created to Celebrate Resilience and Inclusion
Initiated in 2024, the International Pride Awards aim to highlight stories of resilience, solidarity, and strides toward greater equality. Through these recognitions, organizers wish to remind the global community that inclusion is not just a goal: it is actively propelled by local initiatives and civic movements worldwide.
These awards also serve as a platform to share inspiring stories and motivate others to continue efforts for human rights.
Significant Legal and Social Challenges Remain
Despite these advancements, the situation remains concerning in many countries. Currently, 65 states still uphold laws criminalizing consensual same-sex relationships in private settings.
Among them, seven countries enforce the death penalty for such acts, while in five others, a lack of comprehensive legal security leaves affected individuals in a state of uncertainty. Moreover, constitutional protections are scarce: only twelve countries explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, five include gender identity, one protects gender expression, and none mention sex characteristics. These statistics are available in the ILGA World database.
Dedicated Advocates Despite Risks
Amidst these challenges, many human rights defenders bravely continue their fight. Across different regions, activists devote their energy, and sometimes their personal safety, to promoting LGBTIQ+ equality, dignity, and recognition.
The International Pride Awards aim to spotlight these initiatives and stories, amplifying their impact, inspiring further commitments, and strengthening the global momentum for change.

A Global Call for Nominations
Nominations for the International Pride Awards 2026 will open from March 17 to April 17, 2026. Submissions can be made online via the official awards website, available in English or Spanish.
UNDP and ILGA World invite the public to nominate individuals whose actions significantly impact promoting LGBTIQ+ equality and inclusion. Initiatives may be local, community-based or fit into wider advocacy efforts on an international scale.
A committee of LGBTIQ+ activists, human rights defenders, and experienced personalities will select the awardees.
Equality: A Pillar of Sustainable Development
“Equality is fundamental to sustainable development,” stated Mandeep Dhaliwal, Director of UNDP’s HIV and Health Group. “When LGBTIQ+ individuals are excluded, criminalized, or left without protection, society as a whole suffers. The International Pride Awards honor those advancing dignity, justice, and inclusion, often in challenging environments, reminding us that inclusive governance and equal opportunities are essential for building resilient and prosperous communities for all.”
A Beacon of Hope Amidst Division
For Julia Ehrt, Executive Director of ILGA World, this initiative sends a strong message in a world sometimes marked by political tensions.
“We are proud to collaborate with UNDP to honor the courageous individuals who are paving the way for progress and change for everyone,” she noted. “At a time when reactionary forces sow division for political gain, the International Pride Awards remind us that a more equal world is a happier world for all.”
A Platform to Showcase Leadership and Inclusion
The International Pride Awards serve as an international platform dedicated to recognizing those whose commitment strengthens social movements, promotes human dignity, and opens up new opportunities for LGBTIQ+ communities.
In this context, numerous initiatives and updates related to LGBTQ+ rights and visibility are frequently featured in the section dedicated to LGBT events and activism worldwide, bringing together various community news and initiatives.
Beyond accolades, the initiative reaffirms an essential principle: no one should be left behind.
