Record-Breaking Donation for LGBTQ Youth
Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, former wife of Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has donated a substantial $45 million to The Trevor Project. This announcement was made on Monday by the organization, which focuses on suicide prevention among LGBTQ youth across the United States.
Significant Support for a Struggling Organization
The Trevor Project, which faced financial challenges due to reduced federal funding during the Trump administration, calls this donation the largest they have ever received in their 27-year history. Jaymes Black, the CEO, highlighted the profound impact of such generosity: “This donation marks a pivotal step in enhancing our resources long-term, yet our organization continues to battle a significant public health crisis: suicide among LGBTQ youth,” he expressed in a statement.
Worsening Mental Health Concerns
A study by The Trevor Project, released in October, reveals a significant decline in the mental health of LGBTQ youth between September 2023 and March 2025. This research, which tracked over 1,600 young individuals nationwide, shows an increase in anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts within this community.
The findings are in line with other studies indicating that LGBTQ youth are at least four times more likely to attempt suicide compared to their non-LGBTQ peers.
Financial Strains After Federal Cuts
In the summer of 2025, the Trump administration terminated a portion of grants aimed at suicide prevention and support for LGBTQ youth. This action deprived The Trevor Project of approximately $25 million in funding, heightening the importance of private donations like that of MacKenzie Scott.
Massive Philanthropic Efforts Since 2019
Since 2019, MacKenzie Scott has embarked on an extensive philanthropic mission. According to her foundation Yield Giving, she has donated nearly $26 billion to thousands of non-profit organizations worldwide, reinforcing her increasing role in funding urgent social causes.
