A Bold Coming Out on Instagram
Swiss tennis rising star Mika Brunold, 21 years old, publicly came out as gay in a heartfelt Instagram post. Sharing his truth with honesty and vulnerability, he wrote: “As a professional tennis player, I’ve spent countless hours working on my game, my body, and my mindset. Through all of that, one of the most important things I’ve learned is that success on court is not just about physical skill. It’s also about discovering who you are and staying true to your values. […] That’s why it’s time for me to open up and share that I’m gay.”
This personal statement stands out in a sport still largely dominated by heterosexual narratives, where open discussions about sexual orientation remain scarce.
A Promising Career on the Rise
Brunold’s coming out comes at a time when his career is experiencing significant momentum. Over the past 18 months, the young player has climbed from world No. 750 to No. 310 in the ATP rankings. While he has yet to qualify for major events like the Australian Open, his steady ascent signals tremendous potential for the seasons ahead.
In his post, he emphasized the significance of being transparent—not just for himself, but for greater LGBTQ+ visibility in sport: “I’m sharing this to take a big step forward for myself, but also because this topic is still not talked about enough in sports. Ideally, there would be no need to come out at all.”
The Weight of Silence and the Power of Pride
Beyond the announcement itself, Brunold opened up about the internal struggles he’s faced in accepting his identity: “Being gay isn’t just about who you love,” he explained. “It also comes with challenges most people never think about—the fear of rejection, the pressure to keep quiet, and the feeling of being different. I’ve come a long way. And today, I’m proud of who I am.”
He ended the message with a tribute to those who supported him throughout his journey: “Without you, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.”
A Warm Reception and Inspiring Precedents
Mika Brunold’s announcement was met with an overwhelmingly positive response: over 24,000 likes and hundreds of supportive comments, ranging from heartfelt words of encouragement to simple emojis of love and strength. It’s a moment that contributes to a more inclusive environment in professional tennis, potentially inspiring other athletes to live more openly.
In recent years, the tennis world has begun to see a shift. In 2022, Russian WTA player Daria Kasatkina revealed she was dating a woman, while also condemning her country’s anti-LGBTQ+ stance. Then in December 2024, Brazilian player João Lucas Reis da Silva became the first male professional tennis player to publicly post a photo with his boyfriend, courageously affirming his sexuality at age 24.
Brunold’s step is part of this growing wave of authenticity, helping dismantle taboos and bringing much-needed representation to a sport still catching up with the times.
