Anti-LGBTQ Rhetoric RNC
A Speech Marked by Anti-LGBTQ Remarks
On the first night of the Republican National Convention (RNC), several prominent speakers employed anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, reflecting the party’s 2024 agenda. This agenda includes calls to exclude “men from women’s sports” and to end the “left’s gender madness.”
Targeting Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Individuals
Monday’s speeches specifically targeted transgender and gender non-conforming individuals. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, stated, “Let me be clear: there are only two genders.”
Representative John James, a Republican from Michigan, criticized the participation of transgender women in women’s sports, a recurring issue among conservatives. “Our daughters have been sold hope, and now they are forced to play on playgrounds and in locker rooms with biological men,” he asserted.
Opposition to Teaching Gender Ideology
Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin, also addressed another conservative target: the teaching of gender ideology and sexual orientation in schools. He referenced Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill, saying, “This fringe agenda includes competition between biological men and girls, as well as the sexualization and indoctrination of our children,” which elicited boos from the audience.

Context of Anti-LGBTQ Incidents
These speeches occur against a backdrop of a wave of anti-LGBTQ incidents, including attacks on pride flags and the destruction of pride month banners. Anti-LGBTQ legislation has increased in recent years, with at least 75 laws enacted in 2023 across 23 states, particularly targeting gender-affirming care and school sports, according to an NBC News analysis based on data from the American Civil Liberties Union.
Republican Platform and Democratic Criticism
Before the convention, Republicans released their platform, affirming their intention to end what they call the “left’s gender madness.” The document states that Republicans will “exclude men from women’s sports, ban taxpayer-funded sex change operations, prevent taxpayer-funded schools from promoting gender transition, overturn Biden’s radical rewriting of Title IX education regulations, and restore protections for women and girls.”
President Biden’s campaign team criticized North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, a Republican candidate for governor, for his past comments about LGBTQ people, although he did not repeat them in his Monday speech. In 2021, Robinson had stated, “There is no reason anybody anywhere in America should be telling any child about transgenderism, homosexuality, any of that filth.”
