Doctors of the World Warns USAID
A Drastic Reduction in USAID Funding
The United States has decided to cut 92% of the funding allocated to USAID’s international programs, the American development agency. This budget, which previously reached $42.8 billion annually, played a key role in supporting humanitarian ecosystems across the globe.
Millions of Women Deprived of Healthcare
Jean-François Corty, president of Doctors of the World, warns about the devastating consequences of this abrupt decision. According to him, around 11 million women will be directly affected, particularly in terms of sexual and reproductive health. He highlights that two million women will lose access to contraception due to the lack of immediate alternatives.
A Deadly Impact on Maternal Health
The NGO estimates that this funding cut will lead to dramatic consequences, including nearly 10,000 maternal deaths due to the lack of medical care during pregnancy.
Organizations at Risk of Disappearing
Beyond the health impacts, this decision threatens the survival of many organizations defending women’s rights, minorities, and LGBTQI+ communities. The loss of funding could lead to the disappearance of these structures, which play a crucial role in advocacy and support for vulnerable populations.
