European Medical Organizations Strongly Support Gender-Affirming Care
A Direct Rebuttal to the UK’s Cass Review
A newly released report from multiple European medical organizations reaffirms the importance of gender-affirming care for transgender youth. Compiled by 26 medical and psychotherapeutic associations from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, this 400-page document also delivers a strong critique of the UK’s Cass Review, which argues that such treatments pose risks to minors.
Endorsement of Puberty Blockers and Individualized Treatment
According to an analysis by transgender journalist Erin Reed, the report—originally written in German—advocates for the use of puberty blockers and stresses the need for personalized care. It highlights the urgency of providing swift medical and psychological support when delays could lead to irreversible physical changes, such as a deepening voice. The report insists that ensuring timely access to care is crucial for the well-being of transgender youth.
Challenging the Cass Review’s Psychotherapy-Only Approach
The European report strongly opposes the Cass Review’s endorsement of psychotherapy as a primary treatment for gender dysphoria. It states that none of the studies cited in the Cass Review provide evidence that psychotherapy alone effectively reduces gender dysphoria. This directly contradicts the UK report’s call for “extreme caution” in prescribing puberty blockers or hormone therapy to minors.
Backlash from Transgender Advocates
The Cass Review has faced significant criticism from transgender activists, who argue that it disregards hundreds of studies demonstrating the benefits of gender-affirming care. Erin Reed has pointed out that the UK review relies on outdated concepts rejected by more than 60 mental health organizations, including the American Psychological Association.
Europe Expanding Access to Trans Healthcare
Reed describes these new medical guidelines as a major step forward for trans healthcare in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. She contends that this report refutes claims that Europe is rolling back access to gender-affirming care. Instead, she asserts that it is the United States that is increasingly restricting access, diverging from much of the Western world.
Media Silence on Pro-Trans Report Criticized
Reed also calls out major media outlets for largely ignoring the release of this European report while widely covering the UK’s Cass Review. On Bluesky, she criticized the disparity, noting that while the Cass Review received extensive coverage from major news organizations, this report supporting transgender healthcare has gone virtually unnoticed.
Anyone find it funny how when the UK releases the Cass review to ban trans care, we get everything ranging from New York Times push notifs to op-eds in every major US paper… But when Germany, Switzerland, and Austria release pro-trans youth care guidelines, not a single article anywhere but mine?
