Kenya Supreme Court verdict on LGBTQ group registration reactions
The Supreme Court of Kenya has issued a verdict regarding LGBTQ groups that has elicited mixed responses. Peter Kaluma, representative of Homa Bay Town, tried to overturn a previous decision allowing the registration of these associations. While some LGBTQ rights organizations saw this as a step forward towards equality, others, especially religious leaders, expressed their disagreement, believing that it does not reflect the country’s traditions and principles. Kenya’s main Muslim body, Supkem, expressed its disappointment, while Dr. Ezekiel Mutua, head of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya, also criticized the verdict.
