Pope Meets Ugandan LGBTIQ Activist in Rome
Historic Meeting at the Vatican
In a landmark encounter, a Ugandan LGBTIQ activist had a significant meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican. This meeting, hailed as a step forward in the struggle for equal rights, included the Pope expressing his support for the LGBTIQ community.
A video shared on X by Chapter Four Uganda featured Clare Byarugaba, the organization’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer, warmly greeting and sitting beside the Pope. This visual moment highlights a new chapter in the Church’s engagement with marginalized communities.
Human Rights Violations in Uganda
Byarugaba expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to meet with the Pope, during which she discussed the severe human rights abuses in Uganda. She specifically mentioned the harmful effects of Uganda’s anti-LGBTIQ laws, including the harsh 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act. This legislation has been internationally condemned for its extreme penalties and violation of basic human rights.
Pope Condemns Discrimination
During the meeting, Pope Francis reportedly denounced efforts to strip LGBTIQ individuals of their rights. According to Byarugaba, the Pope emphasized that “discrimination is a sin” and that violence against LGBTIQ people is unacceptable. He also asserted that the Church should never engage in discrimination and should stand with those whose dignity has been denied. His words offered a message of hope and encouragement for activists fighting for justice.

Catholic Church’s Stance in Africa
Although Pope Francis has criticized laws criminalizing same-sex relationships, the Catholic Church in some African nations, such as Ghana, has supported oppressive anti-LGBTIQ legislation. Earlier this year, the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) released a statement rejecting the recognition of homosexuality and same-sex unions.
In February, Pope Francis acknowledged the resistance from African Catholics to his more inclusive stance on LGBTIQ issues, noting that in many African cultures, homosexuality is seen as morally wrong. He recognized the cultural challenges but reiterated his commitment to fostering dialogue and understanding.
Evolving Attitudes Under Pope Francis
The Vatican, under Pope Francis’ leadership, has shown a gradual shift toward a more inclusive approach to LGBTIQ individuals, even allowing limited blessings for same-sex couples—something previously unthinkable. However, the Church still maintains its rejection of transgender and non-binary identities.
Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act
Uganda’s 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act remains one of the most draconian anti-LGBTIQ laws in the world. It includes life imprisonment for those engaging in homosexual acts and imposes the death penalty for cases of “aggravated” homosexuality. The law also criminalizes the “promotion of homosexuality,” putting human rights advocates in grave danger of imprisonment for up to 20 years for defending LGBTIQ rights.
