President Michael D. Higgins delivered a heartfelt message in honor of Pride 2025, emphasizing the significance of this annual event as a tribute to the dignity and human rights of LGBT+ individuals. This year’s Pride holds special resonance, marking the President’s final appearance in office ahead of the conclusion of his presidential term in November.
Honoring Activists of the Past and Embracing the Future
The President participated in Dublin Pride, joining the parade along O’Connell Street to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Ireland’s landmark same-sex marriage referendum. Now 84 years old, Higgins shared a personal note, saying, “As I embark on the last year of my presidency, I send my warmest wishes to all celebrating Pride 2025.”
He underscored the deeper meaning behind the celebrations: “This annual occasion is a vital affirmation of the rights, dignity, and joy of our LGBT+ communities.” He also paid tribute to the pioneering voices and brave individuals who helped shape history. “It is a time to remember, with gratitude, those who risked so much by taking to the streets when it was dangerous to do so, who spoke truths long suppressed, and who laid the groundwork for the inclusive Ireland we continue to build.”

President Higgins acknowledged the considerable strides made in recent years toward gaining recognition and rights for LGBT+ individuals in Ireland.
