A Reappearance Alarming to Authorities
The potential comeback of the Coco chat platform is causing serious concern among public authorities. In an interview with RMC, the High Commissioner for Childhood, Sarah el Haïry, spoke out against this worrisome situation. She described the platform’s return as “a real slap in the face” to the commitments made for protecting minors.
This reemergence comes despite the platform’s previous shutdown by the judicial system, as detailed in the reasons behind Coco gg’s closure by the authorities.
El Haïry emphasized that these online spaces are far from harmless and could lead to serious activities. Legal proceedings are underway to halt these services, accompanied by a determined stance to pursue them relentlessly: “We will track them down, we will harass them, we will give them no respite.”
A Platform Previously Linked to Numerous Criminal Cases
The day before, Ouest-France had already drawn attention to “the return of the Coco site,” which was closed by judicial order in 2024. According to the publication, the platform has been mentioned in over 23,000 legal cases, including the Mazan case.
For nearly a decade, Dominique Pelicot, sentenced to 20 years in prison, allegedly used this chat service to contact men involved in sexual assaults on his wife, Gisèle Pélicot.
The High Commissioner also discussed various crimes linked to this platform, including “homophobic traps, rapes, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.”
Cocoland: A New Platform Claiming No Connection
Initially accessible via Coco.fr and later through Coco.gg following registration overseas, the service now seems to have resurfaced in a new form. The newly identified site, Cocoland.cc, uses a domain name associated with the Cocos Islands, an Australian territory.
According to Ouest-France, this new platform shares many technical and visual similarities with the former chat, while also generating advertising revenue.
However, on its homepage, Cocoland clearly asserts its independence: “Our platform is an entirely new service, independent and with no legal, technical, or organizational ties to the former Coco site.”
An Autonomous Platform Based on AI
In its legal information, Cocoland describes itself as a platform operating without direct human intervention, claiming to rely on “a fragment of the historic French chat,” managed via artificial intelligence.
The site also stresses the lack of affiliation with Isaac Steidl, the original creator of Coco. Steidl was indicted in January 2025 in Paris on multiple charges, including criminal conspiracy and complicity in matters relating to child pornography.
This context also highlights serious incidents such as ambushes organized via Coco that led to violent assaults, exemplifying the potential pitfalls of these anonymous platforms.
Given these conflicting elements, the question remains: is Cocoland truly an independent new platform, or a reimagination of the controversial Coco chat?
