Detention of Women in Comoros for Same-Sex Relations

Detention Following Marriage Request

Police in Comoros have detained two women on charges of engaging in same-sex sexual activity after they sought an Islamic preacher to marry them, according to a public prosecutor. In Comoros, a Muslim-majority nation in the Indian Ocean with a population of 870,000, same-sex relations are illegal.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

Public prosecutor Ali Mohamed Djounaid announced that the women are currently in pre-trial detention at a prison in the capital city of Moroni. Following their court appearance, they were charged with having “unnatural sex.” Djounaid stated, “They are accused of acts that are contrary to good morals and against nature.”

Potential Penalties

The two women, aged 22 and 25, face the possibility of up to two years in prison if convicted of the charges. Attempts to contact a lawyer representing the women were unsuccessful.
