ELLE Hungary Dares A Rainbow Family on the Cove

The ELLE magazine in Hungary highlights the fight for LGBT rights and boldly presents equality, a move that could have consequences for this popular source.

ELLE Hungary Features a Rainbow Family on its Cover

ELLE Hungary is preparing to release its September issue, a historic issue for the country as it will feature a gay couple with their young child on the cover. On this cover, we find the restoration guru Hubert Hlatky Schlichter, 44, the renowned neurosurgeon Laszlo Szegedi, 48, and the baby of the married couple.

A Historic Issue for ELLE Hungary

It’s a bold and commendable move by ELLE, especially knowing that Hungary is one of the countries that still maintains restrictions against gay people. The anti-gay rhetoric is mainly fueled by the country’s Prime Minister, Viktor Mihály Orbán. Gay marriage and adoption by gay couples are still illegal there, and transgender people face even stronger discrimination from the government.

Sanctions Against LGBT Literature in Hungary

Let’s remember that Hungary also made headlines in July 2023 by fining a bookstore, equivalent to $36,000, for displaying copies of “Heartstopper” on its shelves.

ELLE’s Statement on Their Brave Decision

In a statement released by Los Angeles Blade, ELLE comments on their decision by saying: “On the cover of our latest issue, we present a Hungarian rainbow family: we discover the story of their formation as a family, their honest and loving daily life with their little daughter, Hannabell. Hubert Hlatky-Schlichter and Dr. László Szegedi speak openly about the difficulties and prejudices they faced as a gay couple in their country and how the arrival of their daughter changed their lives. With their story, we want to send a message to all those who felt that they or their loved ones were recently attacked: you are not alone, and there is a positive scenario! We hope that with our current issue, even on a small scale, we contribute to the acceptance of rainbow families and manage to inspire, encourage, and support the thousands of readers who share our values. The slogan of our cover perfectly sums up our message: Born from love, because families, whatever their structure, are rooted in deep and unconditional love. Join the conversation using the hashtag #BornFromLove to advocate for all forms of love and family across the country !”

Support and Hope for Rainbow Families

The support is certainly appreciated! Kudos to ELLE for their unwavering support for “rainbow families” and let’s hope the publication doesn’t face too much backlash for showcasing this historic moment. This show of solidarity means a lot to the young people growing up and the adults fighting for freedom in Hungary.

A Dig at Prime Minister Viktor Mihály Orbán
