ELLE Hungary is preparing to release its September issue, a historic issue for the country as it will feature a gay couple with their young child on the cover. On this cover, we find the restoration guru Hubert Hlatky Schlichter, 44, the renowned neurosurgeon Laszlo Szegedi, 48, and the baby of the married couple.

A Historic Issue for ELLE Hungary

It’s a bold and commendable move by ELLE, especially knowing that Hungary is one of the countries that still maintains restrictions against gay people. The anti-gay rhetoric is mainly fueled by the country’s Prime Minister, Viktor Mihály Orbán. Gay marriage and adoption by gay couples are still illegal there, and transgender people face even stronger discrimination from the government.

Sanctions Against LGBT Literature in Hungary

Let’s remember that Hungary also made headlines in July 2023 by fining a bookstore, equivalent to $36,000, for displaying copies of “Heartstopper” on its shelves.
