A Week of Controversy Ends with Continued Mobilization
Despite a heated debate, the Pride march took place in Faches-Thumesnil, near Lille, on Saturday, April 25, 2026. Originally canceled by the mayor due to organizational issues, the event was ultimately upheld by LGBT associations. The municipal decision had sparked significant backlash from the involved collectives. In total, over 400 participants marched to advocate for LGBT rights, amidst a blend of mobilization and discontent.
Associations Step Up to Organize Amidst Chaos
Organizers reported being informed of the cancellation just a week before the planned date, with the event already scheduled. According to Tristan Haute, the reasons provided by the municipality were deemed unsatisfactory. To counteract this, associations urgently declared the march with the prefecture to proceed with the event.
The Municipality Cites Organizational Constraints
Conversely, Mayor Brice Lauret, newly elected, described the cancellation as temporary and driven by a need for reorganization. He emphasized that the newly formed municipal team wanted time to coordinate the event with other entities. The mayor also noted that a meeting was proposed with the collective for the following week, which was allegedly declined, hinting at a “political maneuver” from the organizers.
Disagreements Over Rescheduling the March
The associations dispute this account, arguing that the cancellation indicates a lack of support from the new municipal team for the event. They recall that a rescheduling to June was discussed but deemed unsuitable due to the already packed Pride calendar. According to them, the April event was strategically planned to align with other local initiatives such as the Pride Ball. They also lament a lack of consultation with all partner associations.
Controversy Surrounding the Removal of the LGBT Flag
Another point of tension arose from the removal of the LGBT flag from the town hall facade. Many protesters viewed this as a symbolic gesture against their rights. The municipality defended the action by citing procedural rules related to the May 8 commemorations, stating that only the French and European flags could be displayed permanently. The mayor also noted that June is traditionally reserved for Pride celebrations, suggesting that the flag’s display in April was inappropriate.
A Peaceful End to a Contentious Event
Despite the disagreements, the April 25 march proceeded peacefully. The municipality expressed intentions to organize a new event at the end of June aimed at promoting the fight against all forms of discrimination.
