Controversial Photo Sparks Outrage Online
Moroccan feminist activist Ibtissame Lachgar was taken into police custody following the circulation of a controversial photo on social media in late July. The image depicted her wearing a t-shirt bearing the phrase “Allah is lesbian.” Posted from her account @IbtissameBetty, the photo was accompanied by a caption criticizing Islam as “fascist, phallocratic, and misogynistic,” alongside a broader critique of religious ideologies. The post quickly ignited a firestorm on various platforms, with many users demanding her arrest.

Activist Targeted by Online Threats
Known for her outspoken advocacy on women’s rights, LGBTQ+ visibility, and personal freedoms, Lachgar reported being subjected to a wave of online harassment following the post. According to her, she received “thousands of rape and death threats, along with calls for lynching and stoning,” all stemming from what she says was a reappropriated feminist slogan.
Moroccan Prosecutor’s Statement
On Sunday, August 10, the Office of the Public Prosecutor at the Court of First Instance in Rabat released a statement announcing an official investigation and her detention. Authorities claimed the photo contained “offensive expressions toward God,” and deemed the caption “an insult to the Islamic religion.” Under Moroccan procedure, individuals may be held in custody for 48 hours while preliminary legal action is considered.
Legal Framework in Morocco
Under Moroccan penal law, insulting Islam is punishable by six months to two years of imprisonment and/or a fine ranging from 20,000 to 200,000 dirhams (approximately €2,000 to €20,000). If the offense is committed publicly or through digital channels, the sentence can extend up to five years in prison.
