London’s First LGBTQ+ Cinema Set to Open in Bermondsey
Historic LGBTQ+ Cinema Approved in London
London is set to welcome its first dedicated LGBTQ+ cinema, recently approved by Southwark Council. Named The Arzner, after pioneering filmmaker Dorothy Arzner, the venue will celebrate LGBTQ+ culture through cinema and cocktails. Arzner, a trailblazing lesbian director, was the first woman to direct a Hollywood “talkie” over a century ago.
Reviving an Iconic Space
The new cinema and bar, spearheaded by Simon Burke and Piers Greenlees, is expected to open later this year in the former home of Kino Bermondsey, an independent cinema that closed in January 2023. The venue will feature a single screen with a capacity for up to 50 moviegoers, while the bar and lounge will accommodate a total of 150 guests.

A New Cultural Hub
Speaking at the licensing meeting, Mr. Burke highlighted that The Arzner would provide access to “art house and independent film,” offering a cultural boost to the LGBTQ+ community in the Bermondsey area. The venue is expected to operate as a safe space, continuing the work started with the opening of The Rising SE1, the first LGBTQ+ pub in the area, which Burke and Greenlees launched in April 2022.
A Safe Space for the LGBTQ+ Community
Mr. Burke emphasized the significance of this new venue, stating that The Arzner will be the only LGBTQ+ cinema in London, located in one of the country’s most LGBTQ+-populated areas. The cinema will nearly double the number of LGBTQ+ venues in the area, further enhancing the local community’s safe spaces.
Operating Hours and Future Plans
The cinema and cocktail bar received permission to operate until 23:00 from Sunday to Wednesday, and until midnight from Thursday to Saturday. With its focus on inclusivity and independent film, The Arzner aims to become a cultural landmark for the LGBTQ+ community in London.
