Rising Tensions Ahead of the Upcoming Pride in Pau
Division Within the Local LGBT+ Community
As the fourth edition of Pau’s LGBT+ Pride March approaches, scheduled for Saturday, September 27, internal friction is stirring within the local activist community. Back in June, eight former members of the Arcolan association broke away to form a new organization named Arcolan Pau Béarn. This unexpected move has created confusion and sparked open tensions over who should take the lead in organizing the event.
Controversial Split Leads to Legal Dispute
Michaëlla Clapisson, president of the Centre LGBT+ Sud-Aquitaine — which encompasses regional organizations Nos Couleurs (Landes), Les Bascos (Basque Country), and Arcolan (Béarn) — shed light on the internal struggles that led to the fallout. She described the development as a “deep internal crisis” which saw eight individuals, out of around twenty active members, sever ties with the parent association.
According to her, those who departed allegedly crossed several legal boundaries by using the original association’s name and accessing personal information of activists. Clapisson described these actions as both “illegal and hostile,” stating that this led to significant confusion and unrest among members and supporters.
A Conflict Over Pride Organization
Now, both groups are claiming the right to organize Pau’s annual LGBT+ Pride March, intensifying disagreements as the date draws near. This situation not only creates logistical challenges but also raises broader concerns about governance, representation, and legitimacy within the local LGBT+ advocacy scene.
Unless a resolution is reached soon, this year’s Pride in Pau could become overshadowed by an unprecedented rivalry — putting its unity and message of inclusiveness at risk.
