Update 1.4.5 Shakes Things Up
The iconic game Terraria, one of the most-played on PC via Steam, has recently rolled out its 1.4.5 update, titled “Bigger and Boulder.” This extensive patch, among the most significant in the game’s fifteen-year history, introduces a plethora of new features: over 650 new items, new bosses, and reimagined gameplay mechanics. One of the most talked-about changes affects character creation, which has moved away from binary gender references.
Towards More Freedom in Customization
Instead of imposing a choice between male or female gender options, the game now allows players to customize their avatars across a broader range of criteria like body type and voice. Although this change is minor in terms of functionality, it has been perceived as provocative by some conservative internet users, particularly those who openly oppose LGBTQ+ rights.
A Surge of Criticism on Steam
The game’s community section on Steam was quickly flooded with outraged comments, with some users accusing developers of having “wokenized” the game. One player even voiced a fear of “accidentally choosing a female body,” highlighting the tensions over an interface that is merely more inclusive.
A Humorous Counteraction
In response to the backlash, the Terraria community largely mocked these reactions, using irony to refocus discussions on what’s important, with one summarizing the situation succinctly: “Does it really matter?” Others chose to deflect the conversation by casually discussing their dinner plans. “Meanwhile, I’m making some spaghetti all’assassina,” joked one user.
A Widespread Phenomenon
This isn’t the first time an inclusive modification within the gaming world has triggered visceral reactions. Titles like Roblox, Cyberpunk 2077, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered have recently faced similar criticism. Perhaps the most notable case is that of the streamer Heel vs Babyface, who loudly objected upon discovering a pronoun selection option in Starfield, denouncing what he saw as an ideological shift in the gaming industry.
