International Pride Awards : Celebrating LGBTQI+ Advocates for Equality

The International Pride Awards recently debuted in Cape Town, South Africa, during the 31st ILGA World Conference, drawing global attention to LGBTQI+ equality efforts. This prestigious event, co-hosted by ILGA World and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), honored five exceptional individuals for their unwavering dedication to human rights and equality.

The awardees included Ruslan Savolainen, a Russian activist fighting for LGBTQI+ rights despite being in exile; Immani Da Silva, an Angolan writer and trans advocate challenging societal taboos; and Aaditya Rai, the founder of Nepal’s first charity for LGBTQI+ individuals with disabilities. Also recognized were Sonia Corrêa, a trailblazer with five decades of activism, and Lize Ehlers, an artist and ally combatting homophobia in Namibia.

The event showcased resilience in the face of global challenges, emphasizing the need for continued support. With 61 countries still criminalizing same-sex relationships, the fight for LGBTQI+ rights remains critical.
