Italy Denies Omitting LGBTQ and Abortion References from G7 Declaration

Controversy Over Omitted References in Italy’s G7

Declaration Italy’s far-right government has refuted claims that it removed mentions of abortion and LGBTQ rights from the G7 summit’s final declaration in Puglia. The declaration, released late on Friday, did not include a previously standard reference to the protection of the LGBTQ community’s “gender identity and sexual orientation,” which had been part of last year’s G7 declaration in Japan.

Absence of Abortion Mention

Additionally, the term “abortion” was omitted from a broader commitment to “universal access to adequate, affordable, and quality health services for women, including comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights for all.” This contrasts with last year’s communique, where G7 leaders explicitly pledged to address “access to safe and legal abortion.”
