Female Viewership of Gay Porn
Nearly Half of Gay Porn Viewers Are Women
As part of Pride Month celebrations, Pornhub has released its annual data regarding the consumption of gay porn content—and one statistic in particular has stood out: 47% of viewers in the gay category are women. This figure, highlighted by PinkNews, signals a notable shift in viewing habits on the popular adult content platform.
Access Restored for French Users
Following a two-week suspension due to a legal dispute with Arcom over age-verification compliance, Pornhub is once again accessible in France without the need for a VPN. This comes as good news for users of all orientations, especially considering that female engagement with gay male videos has become increasingly significant.
A Global Trend: Female Viewership of Gay Porn
Women’s preference for gay porn isn’t a new revelation. Back in 2014, in its study What Women Want, Pornhub already ranked gay porn as the second most popular category among female users—just behind lesbian porn. In contrast, male viewers ranked gay content only seventh in popularity.
Steady Growth Since 2016
The proportion of female viewers in the gay content category has steadily risen, growing from 37% in 2016 to 47% in 2025—an overall increase of 10 percentage points in nine years. This percentage is notably higher than women’s overall share of Pornhub traffic, which stands at 38% globally and 30% in France, based on figures from late 2024.
New Perspectives on Male Sexuality
Pornhub analysts attribute this growing interest to content labeled “Solo Male,” frequently produced by gay male actors. These types of videos are said to offer an alternative to the traditional “male gaze” prevalent in heterosexual porn, steering away from sexist portrayals. One female user interviewed by Insidehook in 2021 remarked: “Blowjobs are portrayed as a form of art, rather than just a guy using a woman’s face for sex. What makes it sexy is the intimacy—bodies that admire the male form and give genuine pleasure.”
A Cultural Phenomenon Beyond Porn
Women’s fascination with male-on-male interactions extends far beyond adult content. The widespread popularity of yaoi—a genre of manga focused on romantic relationships between men—is another reflection of this trend. Often created and consumed by women, these stories offer “alternative male representations, strongly filtered through a feminine perspective,” as webtoon editor Rutile at Dargaud explained in a têtu· article from 2023. She added: “The content marketed to straight women is often underwhelming, so it makes sense they’d turn to Boys’ Love instead.”
