Shifnal Church to Host Town’s First Pride Event in Late June

St Andrew’s Church Celebrates LGBT Community

St Andrew’s Church in Shifnal will hold the town’s first-ever Pride event at the end of June. This celebration, part of Pride Month, will honor lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals through a special church service.

Promoting Inclusivity through Church Service

Organizers hope that holding the event in a church will foster a sense of inclusivity. “It is not very common in the church to organize such a service, so we are keen to break down barriers and old stereotypes,” said event organizer Ian Handley.

Strong Support from Clergy and Congregation

Mr. Handley highlighted the strong support from both the clergy and the congregation. “We have a fantastic clergy who are really supportive. Our Sunday congregation is also very much behind us on this. It’s really reassuring,” he told BBC Radio Shropshire.

Welcoming the LGBTQ+ Community

The church is inviting as many people as possible from the LGBTQ+ community and their supporters. “We want this to be a celebration,” said Handley. The service will resemble the usual Sunday service but will be more informal and relaxed.

Creating a Welcoming Atmosphere

Recognizing that entering a church for the first time can be daunting, Handley explained, “We want to remove that element of intimidation.” He shared his personal experience, noting the positive impact the church has had on his life. “Being part of the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve found so much acceptance, and it took me by surprise,” he said.

Breaking Misconceptions About Church Acceptance

Handley emphasized the importance of making a visible difference for those who wish to be part of the Church. “I think a lot of people feel they are not welcome in a church if they are gay, or whatever their form is,” he added.

There are hopes that this service will become an annual event. The inaugural service is scheduled for Sunday, June 23, at 6:00 PM BST.
