Austria : 15 Arrested in Connection with Anti-LGBT+ Attacks
A Violent Network Exposed
Austrian authorities arrested 15 individuals on Friday, suspected of carrying out violent attacks against people based on their sexual orientation. These arrests come amid a rising wave of anti-LGBT+ crimes across Europe. According to the Styrian police, the suspects used fake profiles on dating apps to lure victims. This tactic was first flagged as a concern in July 2024.
Coordinated and Brutal Attacks
The attackers operated in organized groups, often concealing their identities behind masks. They targeted victims at night, subjecting them to severe beatings. Authorities have also reported a case of attempted murder. Beyond physical violence, the attackers humiliated their victims by filming the assaults and sharing the footage online.
False Claims to Justify Hate Crimes
The suspects attempted to justify their actions by claiming they were hunting pedophiles. However, Austrian police dismissed this claim, stating that the attacks were clearly aimed at the gay community. Authorities fear that many victims have not come forward, meaning the actual number of cases could be much higher than the 17 officially reported.
A Major Police Operation to Break the Network
Over 400 officers were deployed in a massive crackdown, conducting raids on 23 locations. During the searches, authorities seized weapons and Nazi-related materials. The 12 men and 3 women arrested, aged 14 to 26, come from Austria, Germany, Croatia, Romania, and Slovakia.
Rising Anti-LGBT+ Violence in Europe
Recent statistics from 2023 reveal a sharp increase in attacks on sexual minorities in Austria. This trend is also seen across Europe, as highlighted in a report by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). Experts link this surge in violence to the growing influence of far-right movements across the continent.
A Long History of Struggle for LGBT+ Rights
Austria has long been influenced by Catholic conservatism, which delayed the recognition of LGBT+ rights. After the persecution of homosexuals during the Nazi era, the country made slow but significant progress. In 2019, the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage and adoption, ensuring greater equality. Today, these rights are widely accepted by the Austrian public.
Government Calls for Action Against Hate
In response to these attacks, the Austrian government has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting discrimination and violence against LGBT+ individuals. Officials are urging stronger measures and greater public awareness to combat this growing threat.
