Imam Muhsin Hendricks Shot Dead
A Killing That Stirs Outrage
The murder of Muhsin Hendricks, recognized as the world’s first openly gay imam, has caused shockwaves across South Africa. Known for his advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights, he was fatally shot in his vehicle over the weekend. While several LGBTQIA+ organizations suspect a hate crime, authorities have yet to confirm a motive and are actively investigating.
How the Attack Unfolded
Surveillance footage reportedly shows a gray pickup truck blocking Hendricks’ car. A masked individual dressed in black is seen stepping out and approaching the imam’s window before the fatal shooting.
Authorities in the Eastern Cape confirmed that the incident took place on Saturday, February 15, around 10:00 AM. Muhsin Hendricks, aged 58, was shot and killed. Police are searching for two suspects, but no arrests have been made so far.
A Trailblazer for Queer Muslims
Hendricks publicly came out as gay in 1996, making history as the first openly gay imam. His mosque near Cape Town became a safe haven for queer Muslims and other marginalized individuals seeking a welcoming space.
Despite potential threats due to his activism, he declined personal security. “The need to be authentic was greater than the fear of dying,” he had recently stated.

Condemnations and Reactions
The Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa condemned the murder and all forms of violence against the LGBTQIA+ community. However, the organization also reiterated its disagreements with some of Hendricks’ views.
Was His Activism the Reason Behind His Murder?
Unverified reports suggest that Hendricks was on his way to officiate a same-sex wedding when he was killed. While this has not been confirmed by the police, it has intensified concerns that his assassination could have been motivated by hatred. Authorities continue their investigation to determine the circumstances and motive behind his tragic death.
