Netherlands Issues Warning to LGBT+ Travelers About U.S. Laws
Updated Travel Guidance for Dutch Citizens
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has updated its travel advisory for LGBTIQ+ individuals planning to visit the United States. The revised guidance highlights legal and cultural differences that could impact these travelers.
Shift in Official Travel Advice
Previously, Dutch authorities considered U.S. LGBT+ rights to be similar to those in the Netherlands. However, as of Tuesday, this has been replaced with a cautionary note, warning that several U.S. states have introduced laws that may restrict the rights of LGBTIQ+ individuals, particularly concerning access to healthcare.
No Specific Incidents Behind the Change
A spokesperson for the ministry told RTL Nieuws that this update was not prompted by specific incidents. Despite the changes, the United States remains classified as a “green” destination in Dutch travel advisories, meaning it is still generally considered safe for travelers.
Gender Options on U.S. Visa Applications
The advisory also draws attention to a change in the U.S. visa application process, which now only allows applicants to select “male” or “female” for their gender. Dutch travelers with concerns are advised to reach out to the U.S. consulate in Amsterdam for further information.
Germany Follows Suit with Stricter Warnings
The Netherlands is not alone in revising its travel recommendations. Germany has also tightened its advisories following multiple cases where German citizens, despite having valid visas, were detained and deported by U.S. immigration authorities.
