Protesters Rally in Sofia Against New Anti-LGBT Education Law
“Being LGBT is Not Propaganda,” Proclaims Protester
Simona, a 25-year-old demonstrator, voiced her concerns near Bulgaria’s parliament, stating, “I am here because I believe that being an LGBT person is not propaganda.” She was one of many who gathered on August 7 and 8 in Sofia to protest a recent legislative change.
The protests were triggered by an amendment adopted on August 7, which prohibits the “propaganda, promotion, or incitement” of “ideas and views related to nontraditional sexual orientation and/or gender identity other than the biological one” within the education system. This controversial amendment to the Law on Preschool and School Education was introduced by the pro-Russian far-right Revival party and was passed with significant support—159 votes in favor, 20 against, and 10 abstentions.
