Queer Amsterdam pull out of Pride Walk after Israeli flag row
Queer Amsterdam pull out of Pride : Conflict Over Flag Ban Leads to Withdrawal
The Queer Amsterdam foundation has decided to step back from organizing this year’s Pride Walk in Amsterdam following a dispute concerning the prohibition of Israeli flags during the event. The Pride Walk is a key feature of the annual Pride celebrations in the Dutch capital.
Social Media Outcry and Mayoral Intervention
The controversy erupted last week when Queer Amsterdam announced on social media that Israeli flags would not be allowed at the Pride Walk. This decision sparked widespread backlash, leading Mayor Femke Halsema to clarify that there are no flag bans during the walk. In response, the organizers issued an apology, citing a “confused formulation” and lack of proper context in their initial statement.
Withdrawal Announcement
Despite the apology, Queer Amsterdam announced on Instagram that they would be withdrawing from their role in organizing the walk. The organization stated, “As we said, our wording in a previous post was unfortunate. But we cannot wholeheartedly welcome or support all flags in this political climate. We think it is important to compromise, but not to the extent that we lose sight of who we are and what we stand for.”

Continued Organization by Stichting Homomonument
The Stichting Homomonument, the founding organization, will take over the organization of the Pride Walk, which is scheduled for July 20. The walk will proceed as planned, ensuring continuity in the event’s execution.
Protests and Advocacy
The flag ban had drawn protests from groups such as the Centraal Joods Overleg, which highlighted the inconsistency of allowing flags from countries where homosexuality is criminalized while banning the Israeli flag. In a social media post, Stichting Homomonument emphasized the importance of the Pride Walk in advocating against the discrimination, oppression, and persecution of individuals based on their sexual orientation or gender identity worldwide.
Historical Context and Upcoming Events
Pride Amsterdam has traditionally been organized by the Pride Amsterdam Foundation (SPA). Last year, Queer Amsterdam was included in the organizational efforts, a move that was met with its own set of controversies. This year’s Pride Amsterdam is scheduled from July 27 to August 4, with the iconic canal boat festival on August 3. The Pride Walk, traversing the city center and centered around the Dam, will occur on July 20, followed by the Pride March to Vondelpark on July 27.
