Tsai Ing-wen’s Legacy in LGBTQ Advocacy

During her eight years as President, Tsai Ing-wen has been a vocal supporter of marriage equality and has worked towards creating a Taiwan where individuals can express themselves freely and marry whomever they choose, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. The landmark legalization of same-sex marriage in 2019 underscored her administration’s commitment to gender equality and LGBTQ rights, enhancing Taiwan’s reputation as a leading advocate in this area.

A New Identity for Taiwanese Youth

For many Taiwanese, particularly the younger generation, being pro-LGBTQ has become a significant part of their identity. This progressive stance allows Taiwan to differentiate itself from the Chinese government, which has been known for its stringent crackdowns on LGBTQ communities.

Lai Ching-te’s Visible Support

In October 2023, Lai Ching-te, then Vice President of Taiwan and a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), made a notable appearance at Taipei’s annual pride parade, the largest in East Asia. Sporting a rainbow-patterned scarf, Lai became the highest-ranking Taiwanese official to participate in the event since its inception in 2003. His attendance marked a significant moment in Taiwan’s ongoing support for LGBTQ rights, signaling a continuation of the progressive policies championed by Tsai Ing-wen.
