Trump New Restriction on Transgender Athletes
A New Restriction on Transgender Athletes
On Wednesday, February 5, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at barring transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. The move, widely criticized as another attack on LGBT rights, was announced during a White House ceremony attended by numerous female athletes who applauded the decision.
Targeting Schools and the Olympic Committee
Under this order, schools that allow transgender students to join female sports teams will face cuts in federal funding. “There will be no federal funding for these schools,” Trump declared. Additionally, with the 2028 Summer Olympics set to take place in Los Angeles, the president increased pressure on the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He stated, “My administration will not sit back and watch men defeat female athletes,” repeating a disputed claim regarding Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, whom he falsely identified as male.
To further enforce this policy, Trump also announced that transgender athletes seeking to compete in women’s categories would be denied entry into the U.S. through visa restrictions.
Escalating Policies Against Transgender Rights
Since returning to office on January 20, Trump has ramped up measures targeting transgender individuals. One of his recent executive orders bans transgender people from serving in the U.S. military, a decision impacting roughly 15,000 service members. Additionally, he signed legislation restricting gender transition treatments for minors under 19 years old.

A Deeply Divisive Political Issue
Transgender rights remain a contentious topic in the U.S., with Trump frequently using the issue to rally conservative voters. He has also attacked his political opponent, Kamala Harris, for supporting transgender rights, calling it part of what he describes as “the transgender delusion.”
Meanwhile, a bill passed in the House of Representatives in January seeks to further restrict transgender women from competing in collegiate women’s sports. Similar bans are already in place in secondary schools across many states.
The Impact on Transgender Youth
According to research from the Williams Institute at the University of California, approximately 1.3 million adults in the U.S. identify as transgender, accounting for about 0.5% of the population. Among adolescents aged 13 to 17, the percentage is higher, reaching 1.4%, or roughly 300,000 individuals. Studies consistently show that transgender youth face higher risks of depression and suicide compared to their peers.
The latest order from Trump has raised serious concerns over its potential consequences on the mental health and well-being of transgender individuals in the United States.
