Tunisia: Intensified Crackdown on the LGBTQ+ Community and Its Supporters – A Growing Repression Documented in a Report
The Tunisian association Intersections recently published a report shedding light on the worsening repression against the LGBTQ+ community in Tunisia. Members of this community are increasingly facing violence and a complete lack of access to justice.
Revealing Testimonies of Systemic Exclusion
The report is based on twelve interviews conducted in September 2024 with queer individuals in Tunisia, a period marked by a wave of arrests and a surge in hateful rhetoric. Researcher Hazem Chikhaoui, the report’s author, describes the harsh realities faced by these individuals in a country where homosexuality remains criminalized.

Nonexistent Access to Justice for the LGBTQ+ Community
During a closed presentation, Hazem Chikhaoui emphasized the complete lack of legal protection for this community. “Justice is entirely absent when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community. There is no way to guarantee their existence, protect them, or ensure even minimal security or access to healthcare,” he stated.
Human Rights Organizations Under Pressure
Tunisian NGOs advocating for LGBTQ+ rights are also experiencing increased repression. Saïf Ayadi, a member of Damj, the Tunisian Association for Equality and Justice, denounces the pressure exerted by authorities and supporters of President Kaïs Saïed. “All associations working on LGBTQ+ issues in Tunisia are currently in the crosshairs of the government,” he explains.
In response to this escalating situation, human rights defenders continue to raise alarms about the deterioration of freedoms and the growing persecution of the LGBTQ+ community in Tunisia.
