Cape Town’s Bid for 2030 Gay Games Falls Short
Cape Town failed to secure enough votes to move into the top three finalists for the 2030 Gay Games, despite a compelling presentation in Washington, DC. The Federation of Gay Games (FGG) announced Denver (USA), Perth (Australia), and Auckland (New Zealand) as the final contenders following a weekend of virtual voting.
David Ryan and Ian McMahon, leaders of Cape Town’s bid team, expressed pride in their efforts and emphasized the bid’s broader goals of fostering conversations and advocating for LGBTQIA+ representation across Africa. While disappointed, they remain committed to advancing queer visibility and inclusion on the continent.
The selection process began with 21 cities in December 2023, with Cape Town advancing to the final seven in August 2024. Although it won’t host the Gay Games, Cape Town will hold WorldPride in 2028, affirming its growing status as a leading LGBTQIA+ destination.
