As preparations for the 2025 Oscars are underway, France has announced its candidate for the Best International Feature Film category. The film “Emilia Perez,” directed by Jacques Audiard, has emerged as a top contender. Having been in theaters for five weeks and becoming a summer sensation, this movie could represent France at the prestigious ceremony scheduled for March 11, 2025, as revealed by the National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image (CNC).
The official submission will be sent to the Academy, which will reveal the final list of nominees in mid-January.
Other films were in the running, including Pierre Niney’s “The Count of Monte Cristo” and Alain Guiraudie’s “Miséricorde,” but ultimately, “Emilia Perez” was selected. This musical thriller tells the story of a Mexican cartel leader who makes the radical decision to change his life by pursuing his secret dream: to become a woman, with the help of a lawyer.
Premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, “Emilia Perez” made a significant impact, winning the Jury Prize and the Best Actress Award, recognizing the performances of Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and trans actress Karla Sofía Gascón. In a recent interview, Karla Sofía Gascón expressed her gratitude to Jacques Audiard for trusting her with the role, calling it a major opportunity in her career.
