Nicky Doll Files a Defamation Complaint

French drag queen Nicky Doll, known for hosting “Drag Race France,” has filed a defamation complaint on Friday, August 2, according to an article in “Le Monde.” The complaint targets anonymous internet users and British activist Laurence Fox, who labeled her a “pedophile.”

A Week of Persistent Online Hate

Following the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics, online hate has continued to grow. On July 29, DJ Barbara Butch had already filed a complaint for aggravated cyber harassment and death threats. Today, Nicky Doll is taking legal action due to defamatory remarks, as reported by “Le Monde.

Accusations from Laurence Fox

Nicky Doll’s complaint also targets Laurence Fox, who posted a video of the “Festivities” segment on his X account on July 26, accompanied by insulting and accusatory comments about the performers. This is not Fox’s first attack; he was previously condemned in April for similar remarks against drag queen Crystal and activist Simon Blake, for which he had to pay £90,000 in damages.

Nicky Doll’s Response

Nicky Doll expressed her determination to fight hate speech to “Le Monde”: “This is a fight I want to lead so that openly homophobic people are afraid to use the word ‘pedophile’ because we will go after them.” She added that associating homosexuality with such heinous crimes as pedophilia is unacceptable.

Controversy Over the Opening Ceremony

Since the opening of the Olympics, the ceremony has faced criticism, particularly regarding the “Festivities” segment. This segment, featuring several drag queens at a table, has been interpreted by some as a parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. The organizers stated that it was meant to represent a “great pagan festival related to the gods of Olympus.”

International Reactions

Prominent political figures have also reacted to this controversy. Former U.S. President Donald Trump called the ceremony a “disgrace,” while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged Pope Francis to join him in opposing what he called “perverse propaganda.”

Other Victims of Cyber Harassment

Nicky Doll and Barbara Butch are not the only victims. Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the ceremonies, has also filed a complaint for threats and insults related to his sexual orientation and his supposed Israeli origins. The Paris Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee, along with Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, have expressed their support for the victims of these attacks.

Support from Emmanuel Macron

President Emmanuel Macron expressed his outrage at the cyber harassment suffered by Thomas Jolly. He praised France’s artistic freedom, emphasizing that the opening ceremony reflected the nation’s boldness and pride.
