Liverpool FC Celebrates LGBT+ History Month with Commitment and Inclusion
A Series of Initiatives to Promote Equality
In February, Liverpool FC marked LGBT+ History Month through various events and activities aimed at reaffirming its commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
This celebration coincides with the fifth anniversary of Red Together, a club initiative dedicated to fostering a welcoming environment for everyone.
A Special Event at Anfield to Promote Inclusivity
Anfield hosted a gathering featuring former players, including Neil Mellor and Becky Easton, as well as Cassie Rattray, a representative of LFC’s LGBT+ Supporters Board and a member of Kop Outs, and Rishi Jain, the club’s Director of Impact.
During this roundtable discussion, participants reflected on the progress made towards greater inclusion in football, as well as the challenges that still remain.
Becky Easton shared her journey as a player and the evolution of women’s football, emphasizing the need to preserve its welcoming atmosphere despite its growing popularity.
Neil Mellor highlighted the importance of visibility and support in sports while acknowledging that more work is needed to achieve full inclusion.
Cassie Rattray stressed the crucial role of supporter culture in creating a safe and representative environment for all fans.
Concrete Action for Young Supporters
As part of the celebrations, young members of the Young Persons Advisory Service (YPAS) had the opportunity to attend a Liverpool FC Women’s match. Supported by the LFC Foundation, this initiative aimed to promote representation and inclusion through football, inspiring the next generation.
Liverpool FC, A Model of Inclusion in Sports
The club continues to demonstrate its commitment by maintaining the Premier League Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Standard (PLEDIS) Advanced Level and achieving Level 2 Disability Confident Employer status.
Rishi Jain reaffirmed the club’s ongoing dedication, stating:
“At Liverpool FC, we firmly believe that football is a sport for everyone. Our Red Together initiative is a testament to that. We strive to create an inclusive environment, both on and off the pitch, where every fan, player, and staff member feels valued and respected. While we are proud of the progress made, we recognize that there is still work to be done.”
