Italy’s Right-Wing Party Withdraws Support for LGBT March
Government Withdrawal from LGBT Event Support
ROME (Reuters) – The right-wing government of the Lazio region near Rome announced on Monday that it was withdrawing its support for the capital’s annual LGBT march. This decision has sparked outrage among human rights activists and opposition politicians.
A Politically Sensitive Issue
LGBT rights and gender equality have been particularly sensitive topics in Italy since right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni came to power about seven months ago. Meloni has vowed to combat what she calls the “LGBT lobby.”
A New Regional Administration
Francesco Rocca, the president of the Lazio region backed by Meloni’s party, Brothers of Italy, was elected in February, ousting the previous center-left government. His recent decision to withdraw support for the LGBT march has ignited strong reactions from rights advocates and political opponents.
